It has been announced by LOCOG today, Monday 7th November 2011, that the Olympic torch route will pass through the Saffron Walden constituency. Whilst the final details are being prepared, it is known that the torch will pass through Stansted Mountfitchet, Newport and Saffron Walden as the torch makes its way to its overnight destination of Cambridge on Saturday 7th July 2012.
Not only does the East of England route include villages, towns and cities, the Olympic Torch Relay will also take in landmarks along the way and the Olympic Flame will be carried for sections of the route by different modes of transport. In the East of England this will include it being carried down the white water rapids at the Lee Valley White Water Centre in Hertfordshire. Torchbearers will also take the Olympic Flame to visit iconic sites such as the beach huts at Southwold in Suffolk, and Colchester Castle in Essex.
Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG, said: ‘I’m delighted that the Olympic Torch Relay will take the 2012 Games to almost every corner of the East of England and that we have achieved our ambition to take the Flame to within an hour’s journey of 95% of the population. Now everyone is invited to plan their welcome and find out where they can go to be part of this historic occasion. The Olympic Games are coming to you as the Olympic Flame gives people across the East of England their moment to shine.’
